World’s No. 1-Ranked Dock Diving Dog Goes for Third Consecutive Title
2009-06-25

Pico, the Bravo-sponsored Belgian Tervuren who has been the DockDogs® No. 1-ranked dog in the world for the past two years, will begin her quest for a third consecutive title when she competes at the Harford County Fair in Bel Air, MD, on July 30. This event will be the first in a series of events for Pico as she competes to defend her title throughout the summer, leading up to the DockDogs® National championship in October.

Five-year-old Pico and her owner Anna Balsamo are based in Mamaroneck, NY, where Balsamo manages a small therapeutic farm and riding program for the developmentally disabled.

Balsamo says this year will be Pico’s toughest yet, as there are already two dogs out there that have jumped longer than 27 feet multiple times. Pico’s personal best in 2007 was 27 feet 10 inches and her best in 2008 was 28 feet and 2 inches.

“The competition has always been pretty stiff, but all of Pico’s jumps this year will need to be over 27 feet if she is to get her third consecutive title,” said Balsamo. “It will come down to inches.”

According to Balsamo Pico is the only dog in the world, with the exception of the record-holding greyhound, to jump more than 28 feet in the history of the sport.

Dock Diving is a thrilling, spectator-friendly sport in which dogs compete in jumping distance or height from a dock into a body of water. As with many human sports, there are “weekend warriors” and those who take a more serious approach. In Pico’s case, it is the latter as she competes on a level where titles and cash prizes are at stake in addition to having fun.

Rankings are determined by averaging the best five scores and are done by DockDogs®, the independent governing and sanctioning body for regional, national and international dock jumping performance sports. DockDogs® establishes the rules and standards of the sport, tracks results and records and supports and promotes the growth of its athletes, events, spectators and sponsors.

According to Balsamo, Pico eats Bravo! fresh frozen raw diet pet food exclusively. “Raw meats are the best source for providing Pico with the protein she needs to maintain the muscle necessary for succeeding in dock diving, as well as protecting her joints and spine from injury,” she says. “A proper diet rich in protein without grains or fillers builds overall muscle mass, joint strength and allows Pico to recover quickly between jumps. A quick recovery matters when the outcome is determined over multiple jumps.”

“Bravo’s ingredients are of a much higher quality than any other raw diet I have found and they offer the best variety, which is extremely important, as different meat contains different amino acid profiles,” Balsamo said. “Pico eats chicken, pork, beef, lamb and tripe because feeding such a variety ‘covers all her nutritional bases’ so to speak. And she loves the food – she’s never late for dinner!"
